Background:
Opened in 1952 on a 'pleasant nine acre site', the school was known as Thorpe St William's Primary until 1999. An extension and refurbishment programme is planned for the near future but in the meantime many of the students are taught in temporary accommodation. The school prides itself on its 'high academic standards', achieved 'in spite of its mixed intake'. It also participates 'actively and successfully' each year in local cricket, football, korfball and netball leagues. Music is 'also strong' and children are regularly entered for music exams. The school values its links with business and the community. Each year, it trains 12 PGCE students from the University of East Anglia. The school has an active and involved governing body and is seeking Investor in People accreditation for the strength of its governor-teacher partnership. The school is over-subscribed with more than 130 applications for the 90 places on offer in 1999.
