Background:
Formed in 1970 when the Lakenham Secondaries amalgamated with the Hewett Grammar. Has since developed into 'one of the largest and most fully comprehensive schools in East Anglia' with what the school believes to be the largest school sixth form in England. Major investments in the last 10 years include a new library, a professional-standard theatre, new music rooms, new and re-furbished science laboratories, and more than #200K has been invested in information technology. Pupils can choose French or German as a first foreign language. Wide choice of subjects at Key Stage 4 includes Latin, Spanish, business studies, economics, physical education and sociology. The majority of students take 9 or 10 GCSE subjects. In March 2001 Hewett was granted a School Bonus Award by the Government for improvement in examination results between 1997 and 2000. The sixth form is run in partnership with Framingham Earl High, but all teaching is on the Hewett site. Thirty-five AS subjects are offered, nearly all of which are available to full A-level. 'Very strong commitment' to providing for the individual requirements of students with special educational needs (SEN). 'Exceptionally wide range' of extra activities in sport, music, drama, art and other areas . Residential trips, foreign visits (China, Russia and Sweden), exchanges, and drama and dance productions. 'Successful' teams in all major sports, with teams regularly taking part in national and international competitions. 'Very well established' Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
