Background:
Springwood High School is a specialist Arts College and this has a strong effect on the ethos of the whole school. In 2005 the school was in the top two per cent nationally for contextual value added in key stage two - four and springwood belongs to the specialist schools and academies trust most improved club. The school is situated on a large open site. Permission was given for the school to expand under the popular and successful schools initiative and a building programme is underway. Examination results have improved continuously from 32 per cent in 1999 to 67 per cent A*-C in 2006 and extra-curricular activities are popular and successful particularly in drama, music and sports. This is a school in which every child is supported, so that they make most of their varied abilities. Opportunities are available in many curricular and extra-curricular areas to meet this need. Places will be allocated in sixth form according to the following criteria, in order:1. To students in public care who are due to transfer and live in the area served by the school.2. To students with a statement of special educational need naming the school.3. To students already attending the school.4. To students permanently residing in the catchment area as define by Norfolk Local Education Authority and shown in its catchment area map. If more than 195 such students apply, places will be allocated on the basis of geographical distance from the school gates.5. Up to 10% of available places will be allocated to students living outside the catchment area and wishing to follow Performing Arts courses on a basis of aptitude in the Performing Arts and regardless of distance, provided that their parents assume responsibility for these students' transport to and from school and the costs thereof.i) 10 places will be available for Drama and 10 for Music.ii) Applicants must state on the Application Form whether they are applying for Drama, Music, or bothiii) All students who apply will be invited to come to the school on a given day to complete the aptitude test. In Music this will be an aural test and in Drama a practical activity.iv) An independent assessor will rank applicants in order of aptitude so that places can be offered accordingly.v) No students will be admitted unless they do show aptitude, even if some Arts places then go unfilled.6. To students whose elder brothers or sisters already attend the school.7. To students whose medical conditions make it essential for them to attend Springwood rather than any other school and whose need can be met by the school.8. To any other applicants up to the maximum number to be admitted. If the school is oversubscribed from within any of the above criteria (except criterion 5), places will be allocated on the basis of geographical distance of the student's home from the school gates, the nearest having priority.
